Once our logo was complete, Natasha and I needed to design Save-the-Date cards for our wedding. We wanted to do something different and creative. The final design had to help our guests visualize being in a topical paradise (to sell the idea of a destination wedding in Mexico) while being memorable, unique and enticing. All media had to be consistent with our chosen color scheme: purple and green with blue and periwinkle accents.
This design was inspired by tropical flowers, coconut trees and white sand beaches. Heavy emphasis was placed on spirals as a shape. We wanted to communicate an underling theme of harmony and relaxation, and chose to employ natural imagery to help realize this goal.
To make our Save-the-Date announcements a truly unique treat, we decided to send Taza Mexican chocolate disks with each package (we raised a lot of eyebrows at Canada Post). We built square open-top boxes out of purple mat board and folded our Save-the-Date cards around them like a match box (the card ends clipped together to form a seal). A pull tab was introduced to help slide the internal box out of the folded exterior packaging. We bought 6 flavors of Taza chocolate (Cinnamon, Salted Almond, Vanilla, Guajillo Chili, Coffee and Cacao Puro), and designed 6 different covers to correspond with each flavor.
My packaging design skills were really tested during this project. Millimeters mattered!
